About Rekeyable Padlocks

Solid steel Padlocks are the most difficult padlocks to defeat by force. Other padlocks are constructed from softer materials such as brass, aluminum, and cast zinc. Solid steel is significantly harder that these materials. This means that if a padlock body constructed from softer material is struck with a hammer or attacked with a cutting or drilling tool, the softer materials easily distort and fail and the padlock shackle can be forced open. These premium padlocks have features that offer solutions for most high security application. The lowest priced solid steel padlock models are the 2” wide A50, A51, and A52. These padlocks have non-rekeyable 5-pin cylinders. These cylinders have over 10,000 different key codes and they can be keyed alike, keyed differently, or master keyed. The hardened steel shackles are 3/8” in diameter and range in vertical clearance from 1-1/8” to 3”. Solid steel padlock models in the A5100, A5200, and A5260 series vary in size and shackle clearance, but are constructed with a rekeyable cylinder. The most important advantage of a rekeyable cylinder is that it can be replaced with a new cylinder. This means that the key code of the padlock can be changed by changing the cylinder while avoiding the cost of replacing the entire padlock. Padlocks in series A5100 are 1-1/2” wide with a 1/4” diameter shackle ranging in clearance from 1” to 3”. Padlocks in series A5200 are slightly larger with a 1-3/4” body width and a 5/16” diameter shackle ranging in clearance from 1-1/8” to 5”. Padlocks in series A5260 have a body width of 2”, a shackle diameter of 3/8”, and a vertical shackle clearance of 1-1/8” to 3”.

Larger American Lock solid steel padlocks include the very popular A700 series with the 2-1/2” wide round body and 7/16” shackle diameter. Model A790 is the largest solid steel padlock available with a body width of 3” and a shackle diameter of 1/2”. American Lock models A5300, A5360, and A748 have a shrouded shackle.
